Dedicated to bringing together research on indirect translation

Background information

Anita Kłos graduated in Art History and Italian Language and Literature from the Jagiellonian University in Krakow.  Her main area of interest is history of literary translation in the Polish-Italian cultural exchange during the twentieth century. She is author of various studies on the Polish translations of Giuseppe Ungaretti's, Ada Negri's, Sibilla Aleramo's, Elsa Morante's and Italo Calvino's work. She has participated in national and international research projects, e.g. Scrittrici e intellettuali del Novecento. Fonti e strumenti della ricerca (coordinator: prof. Marina Zancan, Sapienza Università di Roma) and Calvino nel mondo (coordinator: prof. Laura Di Nicola, Sapienza Università di Roma). Anita arrived at indirect translation as a subject of study while working on her PhD project, completed in 2012 at the Jagiellonian University, where her research had focused on Sibilla Aleramo's contacts with Polish literary culture. In the author's archive at the Fondazione Gramsci in Rome, she found La casa delle donne (1931), then unpublished indirect translation of Zofia Nałkowska’s Dom kobiet (The House of Women, 1930), rewritten by Aleramo via mediating versions in Italian and French. Anita prepared a critical edition of La casa delle donne, published in 2018 (Pisa: Pacini). Now, she is the Assistant Professor at the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin, teaching translation theories as well as courses in Italian literature and culture.
